Airline wake up call

To say that I have flown a lot is putting it mildly. It stands to reason that I have seen the safety briefing that the flight attendants go through about a million times. Live, recorded and even acted out by one very enthusiastic attendant who performed a seriously over the top version. That one had the whole plane laughing.

The side effect of all that air time is that once they close the door and pressurize the cabin, I can fall asleep in a heartbeat. I think I have gotten some of my best sleep on airplanes. And to answer your next question, no, turbulence does not bother me at all. I have apparently slept through some pretty severe turbulence based on the comments the people sitting next to me made when we landed and I woke up.

Airline Oxygen Masks

“How did you sleep through that?” Is what I have heard most often.

There was this one time though that got my attention. It seems that we had one of those ‘drop a few feet and hit hard’ moments. It was hard enough that it woke me up. It was also hard enough that it managed to trigger the release of the oxygen masks.

I was trying to come out of a deep sleep and there is this yellow mask hanging in front of me. Oh heck yeah I woke up then! I also went into a moment of near panic as I tried to recall what they said I should do with the blasted thing.

Luckily they were announcing that we did not have to put the masks on and so sorry that they would be hanging there for the rest of the flight. Trust me, you do not want to go through a couple of hour flight with those hanging there reminding you that you were an idiot for forgetting what to do. I did not sleep for the rest of the flight. Way too much adrenalin after that.

What to do is burned into my memory now I assure you.
